Being that I live in Florida, I chose to stay at the newest Getaway House post in Gilchrist Springs. The Idiot Sandwich has braised short rib, confit mushrooms, and spiced tomato chutney on grilled sourdough bread. To be honest, I ordered this sandwich because of its name.
Plan your escape now.
You get all the perks of camping (nature, campfires, hiking, and limited technology) alongside the main perks of civilization (a proper bed with linens, a hot shower, and temperature control). All of that is done on purpose to retain you connected to nature and to truly present in the experience. Allowing you to stay away from screens, just the bare essentials are provided.
Can I set up a tent near my cabin?
I will say, however, that the shower had WONDERFUL water pressure. Although I think that planning a trip is an excellent mental escape from quarantine, I was itching to actually take a trip. Instagram’s advertising algorithm apparently knew this, too, and that’s how I discovered Getaway House.

My goal is to curate a space that interconnects my love for travel and transparency and I hope you will join me on that journey. Being Christina Jane is my way of inviting you to join me on my travel ventures by sharing the knowledge gained from my adventures and experiences— both good and bad. Using the pin pad, I pressed the lock button to lock the door and drove back to my hometown for another 4 hours.

Our stay at The Getaway House -Houston Outpost 2020
From there, we took a stroll around the entire lake (it’s tiny!) in about 45 minutes before hopping back in our car to head back to the city. Getaway House has tiny cabin outposts conveniently located to major cities. Each tiny cabin is outfitted with “everything you need and nothing you don’t” – so they are intended to be the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Getaway, which offers a nationwide chain of tiny cabin resorts called Outposts, has unveiled its largest site to date.
You’ll also find lanterns, books, cards, an activity booklet, and firewood and fire starter for purchase. Put your cell phones in the lock box right away and don’t take take them out until you leave. We immediately placed our cell phones inside and only took them out to connect our music or check the time once a day. The company’s founder, Jon Staff, was raised in a tiny Minnesota village. Despite the demands of his hectic schedule, he abandoned everything to explore and understand nature. He opened Getaway locations around the country in the summer of 2015, near to main towns.

Getaway provides a large comforter on the queen-size bed that does the job, but if you want to be even more cozy or want a plush furry blanket to get you through the night, I would bring your own. Now that I’ve covered the kitchen and the bathroom, I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t like that there is only one sink that, in theory, is supposed to be used as both a kitchen and bathroom sink. The kitchenette appears to take up the most space in the cabin, but for all the good reasons, as it has so much to offer you during your stay. We were assigned the Solomon Cabin #39 toward the back of the Gilchrist Springs outpost, so we had a bit of a drive down the path before arriving in front of our Getaway House for the night. Getaway adopts a contactless check-in experience, which means you don’t have to officially check in with any of the staff members on-site once you arrive.
It’s best to bring your own car in case you need to leave the cabin for any reason, like to get food or have an emergency and have to leave. Getaway provides pretty much everything you need inside of the cabin, but this would not be a complete Getaway House review without telling you what you should bring along on your Getaway House trip. You could also make a cute intimate dinner night out of your stay and choose a meal to prepare at the cabin as part of the experience. I’m one of those people who believe that kitchen and bathroom trash should remain separate, and feel the same way about the sink.
There was WiFi at the Gilchrist Springs location that worked very well during my time there. I mean, the cabin is self-check-in and check-out, so there likely won’t be anyone scolding you if you go over the limit, but it is not advised. I would make sure nothing of value is in clear view from looking into the windows and locking things in your trunk just in case, but I did not have any issues. Getaway does mention that many of its locations are accessible via public transit with a few extra steps. For one, you are going to a location that is a bit secluded from the city or nearest town you are in.
You’re able to lock your door at night and also lock your stuff inside during the day while you’re out adventuring, so there’s nothing to worry about here. Each cabin is outfitted with a fully stocked kitchen, private bathroom and hot shower, AC + Heat, Queen sized bed (or Queen sized bunks) and clean and modern amenities. The large windows are a real showstopper – it was so fun to lay in bed and look out into the trees.
It also might not be a good fit if you don’t like the outdoors, or if you don’t like spending extended amounts of time without devices. Unlike the name might suggest, the Getaway House isn’t just one house! It’s actually a series of many houses, or rather, tiny cabins in locations just outside of some of the biggest cities in the USA. Otherwise, I think that the tiny cabins were outfitted pretty well!
At every Outpost, you’ll find at least one scenic nature trail, a short, easy hike on Getaway property in case you want to go for a quick stroll without hopping in your car to drive to a trailhead. Each location has been specifically picked so that you can reach your Getaway within just a couple hours by car, making it easy to break away even if you only have one or two free nights to spare. Read on for my full review of The Getaway House – what it is, where you can find one, and everything else you need to know about these tiny cabin escapes so you can see whether Getaway is right for you. It’s easy to pound the pavement day in and day out when you live in a busy, bustling city (anyone else live in Los Angeles like me?).
